Unifying Software Development Tools and Workflows in a Central Hub: Our Investment in Port
The shift-left practice has transformed modern software development and long gone are the days when developers’ roles were limited to just writing code. Today, development teams’ responsibilities extend far beyond code writing, encompassing the delivery process of features, managing cloud resources, handling incidents and outages, as well as complying with the organization’s standards for security, quality, and compliance. This expanded remit coupled with the intricacies of the modern development ecosystem, has created a chaotic situation where developers are constantly seeking guidance, creating tickets for tasks outside their core competencies, and relying heavily on tribal knowledge to navigate the landscape. As a result, not only does the pace of development slow, but issues around quality, security, and compliance are exacerbated.
Add the widespread adoption of microservices-style architecture to engineers’ increasing set of tools and responsibilities and it’s easy to see why teams are increasingly overwhelmed. Consequently, there’s a growing demand for Internal Developer Portals (IDPs) that act as a central work hub, providing teams with a single source of truth. In fact, we see the IDP market as the next big must-have in software development, with the potential to rival the impact of APM or Git providers.
Enter Port. The company was founded at the end of 2021 by Zohar Einy (CEO) and Yonatan Boguslavski (CTO). Yonatan hit upon the idea of building Port, having built a low-code developer portal that achieved wide adoption in his previous role. The two set off on a mission to empower teams to start left, ensuring that everything is secure, compliant, and high-quality by design. However, rather than just replicate the solution previously built, the co-founders recognised that every company has different requirements and flexibility was key.
The resulting platform enables developers to handle the full scope of their expanded role by providing an IDP that acts as a central work hub. Port unifies all of the tools and workflows developers need to fully own the software development life cycle within an intuitive interface. The open platform has now emerged as the #1 product in the IDP space due to it being highly customizable while also maintaining agility and ease of use. Teams can use low/no-code to customize the data model to their organization and complex tasks, like spinning up a new microservice, can be performed in just a few clicks with all best practices baked in. Popular LLMs are also integrated within the platform, allowing organizations to embed AI capabilities directly into their customized developer portals.
Not only does Zohar and Yonatan’s dev-first approach set them apart, but the company’s exceptional growth speaks volumes about the team’s product execution and market fit. The company has achieved a 7x year-over-year increase in revenue and its user base has expanded eightfold since its Series A funding just one year ago. In addition to leading brands such as British Telecom and LG selecting Port as the IDP for their engineering teams, the company has also just secured GitHub as a customer. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Zohar and Yonatan on the next phase of their journey.
